El Salvador's President Bukele begins the fifth year of his presidency

Four years ago, on June 1, 2019, Nayib Bukele was sworn in as president of El Salvador.

At 37, he was the youngest head of state in Latin America. He began his five-year term with promises of changing El Salvador’s image abroad and declaring war on organized crime.
