'Bat Friendly' Tequila ensures survival of Blue Agave

Better known as the Mexican Batman, Rodrigo Medellin is the founder of ‘Bat Friendly Tequila,’ an initiative to save the Blue Agave, the primary ingredient in tequila.

Bats depend on the plant for food and the plant depends on the bats for natural pollination. For the last 150 years, tequila distilleries have not permitted the agaves to cross-pollinate and produce seeds, choosing to use to using technology.

Now, the plant has almost no genetic diversity. That’s where the Mexican Batman comes in.
