Mexico's Interoceanic train derails in Oaxaca
A train derailment in Mexico has killed more than a dozen people, and injured many more. Alasdair Baverstock has more from southern Mexico.
ALASDAIR BAVERSTOCK Oaxaca "Mexico's inter oceanic train was not even 100 kilometers into its mountainous journey across here in Oaxaca State when it derailed, killing more than a dozen people and injuring around 100 more. Photographic evidence shows that the locomotive pulling the train veered off the tracks on a steep bend – turning on its side and dragging many of the other rail cars with it.
"The train, run by the country's military, was carrying 250 passengers – 36 of whom are now in serious condition in hospital. Emergency services remain on the scene. The reasons behind the derailment are not yet fully understood, although Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum has ordered an investigation into the cause of the tragedy, while expressing condolences to the victims and their families.
"The train involved is part of Mexico's flagship Interoceanic Corridor project, launched with the intention of providing a logistical alternative to the Panama canal, to cross shipping freight between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
"This derailment is likely to raise fresh questions about rail safety, infrastructure readiness, and the rapid expansion of passenger and freight rail in the region. Authorities say updates will be provided as rescue operations continue and more information becomes available. Alasdair Baverstock, CGTN, Oaxaca.
